'Mary Poppins' is a jolly holiday

The new Broadway production of the classic Disney film, "Mary Poppins," is a jolly holiday from the ordinary.

The musical, which opened a few years ago, was still going strong when I saw it in September.

Like the typical Disney musical, "Mary" features a simple plot and a score of fun, upbeat musical numbers.

The show opens on the dysfunctional Banks family of Cherry Tree Lane. The children have scared away another nanny, and their father faces economic trouble. On top of that, Mrs. Banks is having difficulty sympathizing with Mr. Banks.

Then, in flies Mary Poppins, the practically perfect nanny with a bite for children who don’t behave. At first the children are skeptical, but after a little encouragement from Bert, the friendly chimney sweep, they see the love in Mary’s heart.

From there, a series of replacement nannies and sad musical numbers ensue, and then, a typically sugary sweet Disney ending appears.

Ashley Brown stars as the lovable nanny and plays her a bit meaner than I would have imagined.

The crowd favorite is possibly Gavin Lee, who reprises the role of Bert that he originated in the London cast. His clever humor and charming style add some light.

The show also features a maid and butler of the Banks’ household and a slew of townspeople, statues and chimney sweeps.

This production doesn’t differ much from the film on which it is based, but there are a few small changes. Some musical numbers have also been added to the old favorites.

The set is beautiful and seamless, even when the entire third story of the Banks’ home descends onto the stage repeatedly.

The special effects and visual wonder is where the production wins. While not giving anything away, a few incredible high-flying treats will please every audience member.

The show is completely family-friendly and is actually geared towards younger children. "Mary Poppins" is another hit for Disney, and it sparkles with the Disney touch of visual delight.

This is one of those shows that doesn’t push the envelope, but everyone loves its simplicity and fun.
