As we waited for a monumental defeat at the hands of the Patriots, many of my friends and I hoped at least the commercials would put up a fight on Super Sunday.
To my surprise, the ads were not the best part of the day. It was the other way around. Although only 10 points were scored through 45 minutes of play, it was the most entertaining 10-point game I’ve seen.
The commercials, on the other hand, started off bad, and took a turn for the worse. The usually entertaining commercials were a mixed bag this year, although there were some bright spots in the parade of insanely priced advertising.
One of my favorites was the series of E•TRADE baby commercials. An adult voice coming out of a baby’s mouth is hilarious. That aspect along with the good overall humor did its job and caught my attention, although I don’t think I’ll be buying stock for a little while.
The Doritos commercial with the giant mouse and the man with the mouse trap started off slow, but ended in hilarity as the mouse continued to sack the man almost as hard as Jay Alford did Tom Brady. The Doritos logo flashes, then they cut to the mouse just putting a beat down on the guy. It would be nothing without the beating.
And last, and probably the funniest, was the Audi imitation of "The Godfather." In a remake of a classic scene, an old man wakes up and is covered in motor oil. When he pulls off the sheets, it's not a horse head he sees, but the grille of an old luxury car, and the new Audi R8 zips off.
The last commercial I want to mention is Will Ferrell promo for Bud Light. The whole Will Ferrell thing is getting really old, and he winds up playing the same character in every film. I miss his days on "Saturday Night Live."
